The inmate who escaped the South Mississippi Correctional Institute on Tuesday was arrested shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Greene County.
Mississippi Department of Corrections officials tell us Matthew Chester Tucker, 35, was arrested near the prison and will now face escape charges. MDOC Commissioner Christopher Epps says the public played a major role in getting Tucker back into custody.
"Our officers worked tirelessly with the help of citizens until this offender was back in custody. We are thankful that we were able to capture him in slightly more than 24 hours since he went missing," said Epps. "I appreciate the public's help, and these officers for not giving up until Tucker was back behind bars."
Authorities believe Tucker was unassisted in his escape.
"We believe he acted alone," said CID Director Sean K. Smith.
Tucker is serving a 10 year sentence for kidnapping a minor from Coahoma County.
