Arthur spinning past SC on way north

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Hurricane Arthur is spinning past South Carolina as it moves north.

The storm became a Category 1 hurricane early Thursday with winds of more than 73 mph. It was about 110 miles off Charleston about 5 am.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Horry and Georgetown counties. The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for the entire coast.

Forecasters warn of the potential for rip currents and have issued tropical storm warnings for the near-shore waters as well as hurricane warnings farther offshore.

Arthur is expected to make its closest pass to South Carolina near the Grand Strand this evening. The storm could spin wind gusts from 40 to 50 mph toward the high-rise hotels and condominiums along the Myrtle Beach waterfront.
