Hurricane Arthur may be beneficial for shrimpers

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Officials in the Coastal Empire and Lowcoutnry issueing strong warnings to swimmers and boaters, telling them to expect more rip currents as Arthur moves through the area, but that can be good news for some fishermen, especially shrimpers.

Shrimpers say storms like this tend to be good for business because it helps stir the ocean up, bringing more fish and shrimp to the surface.

"This time of year, the middle of the summer, it really helps us to have a little storm pass by," said Craig Reeves, the Owner of Sea Eagle Market.

Reeves said this is the perfect time to go fishing, because everything is moving out and about.

"The bigger the storm the more devastating it is to our coastal areas... like Hugo or Katrina... big storms like that are not good for our local communities," he said.

Reeves has been shrimping for more than 30 years and said after Hugo hit, the main piece of equiment on his boat was a chainsaw.

"Because we were catchning trees and lawn equipment. I mean it was just, it was awful. But there was a lot of shrimp," he said.

Reeves believe this storm will help his business out a lot.

He also owns Sea Eagle Market in Beaufort and said he's expecting to have about 60 to 70 percent more shrimp in stock by next week and he's already out on his boat.
