Hurricane Arthur affecting local businesses

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Officials in both the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry are telling everyone to be safe out in the water Thursday as Hurricane Arthur moves through our area.

Arthur didn't cause any damage, but it is affecting some businesses.

During the Fourth of July week, Sea Monkeys said they easily bring in $23,000 dollars t, but not this year.

According to the owner, between Wednesday and Thursday, they lost more than $7,000. They blame Arthur, even though Arthur didn't hit us.

"This is our bread and butter season. this is what pays the bills... so something to come through right in the middle of the season is just detrimental," owner Neil Turner said.

Arthur brought high waves and a lot more rip currents, which prompted officials here on Hilton Head Island to put warning flags up, they even went as far as telling people to stay out of the water.

The South Carolina Coast Guard issued a small craft advisory, which shut Sea Monkeys down Wednesday and Thursday morning.

"With a small craft advisory we wont even put a jet ski on hte water," Turner said.

They also can't put kayaks, paddle boards or surf boards out there.

That advisory has been lifted, and Sea Monkeys is letting people jet skis, but nothing else.

"For safety...we want to make sure everyone has a great time out there. Any kind of rip current or anything brings them in, it's just pretty dangerous out there," Turner said.
