BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

"We will have all available man power on the highways, on the interstates, to insure that all of our motorists arrive safely to their destinations," said Mississippi Highway Patrol Lt. John Poulos.

Starting on Thursday evening, state troopers conducted what they call a Fourth of July MHP Enforcement Period. They halted highway traffic to make sure motorists are starting off their weekends by driving safely and responsibly.

"The checkpoints will be in place. The radar details will be in place. We know that the checkpoints are an issue for some motorists. They don't like to be inconvenienced and we understand that, but it helps a lot if they would have their insurance card, their driver's license readily available for the trooper to check that. That way we can verify everything and get traffic moving," Poulos said.

Law enforcement officials are asking drivers to remain patient, courteous and cooperative as they do their jobs to make sure everyone has fun and remains safe throughout the weekend.

"We just ask drivers to make sure that they allot themselves some extra time because of the traffic. You always have additional traffic. Historically, the Independence Day weekend is a busy weekend. There will be a lot of motorists on the highway, and we just ask that they allot themselves extra time to get to their location," Maj. Sgt. Jerry Howie said.

Poulos says the enforcement period will last until midnight on July 6.
