Storm downs trees, knocks out power across Wilmington Island

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Trees were down just about everywhere you looked around the Wilmington Park and Copperfield neighborhoods Thursday afternoon.

Wilmington Island was hit with a violent pop-up thunderstorm, carrying strong winds that brought down trees all over the island. The storm uprooted trees, snapped branches, with some landing on top of homes.

"Well, when I saw the hurricane going up the coast past South Carolina, I just thought we were in the clear. Next thing you know the wind pops up, and this happens. You can't question mother nature you know," said Billy Cannon.

The most frightening part was that people had no idea the strom was coming. Some trees came down in the roads blocking traffic, and even the golf course.

Betz Creek Road and Walthour are closed due to the downed trees.

At one point, almost 4,000 homes and businesses were without power. As of 5 a.m. Friday, Georgia Power was reporting 1,000 remain without power.
