Fireworks and business light up on Tybee

Posted: Updated:

The mayor of Tybee had a better night of sleep Wednesday knowing that the thousands of visitors heading to the island for the holiday weekend would be able to  enjoy the beach Thursday and spend money.

"Typically we have about 30 thousand people come out to the island for our fireworks," said the mayor. With Arthur having passed the area already, business owner's smiles grew Thursday as thousands flocked to Tybee for what the mayor said was the busiest day on the island.  "Ya, we really dodged a bullet with this. We could have been hit at the busiest time of year and that did not happen, "said the mayor.

With the impending fireworks show set for Thursday evening, the beach was packed and waiting when a brief shower storm hit. People ran for shelter anywhere they could find, determined to stick out the storm for the show. For one little guy it was his first trip to Tybee and his first ever firework show.

"We said just drop us off by the pier, he has to see the fireworks, this is Asher Blues first ever time yay," said one visitor of her young son.

As fireworks lit up the sky, the twinkle of the business owner's smiles grew even brighter. One owner saying, "Fourth of July at the beach is like Christmas at the mall." Chrissy's department store was buzzing all day with stuff flying off the shelves and money into the registers. "It's has been a very busy day and we are looking forward to a very busy weekend." They should expect that to be so with the way things have shaped up. One visitor said, it does not matter, sleet, sun, snow it does not matter, we love Tybee, and we love it."

Though the storm passed, Tybee rescue workers said currents are still strong and they made over ten rescues on Thursday. They urge people to be careful if you plan on going out during the holiday weekend.
