Fort Jackson marks July 4th with cannon, fireworks

FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) - Fort Jackson is celebrating the Fourth of July with a patriotic mix of music, fireworks, cannon fire and a historic military torchlight procession.

Army spokesman Patrick Jones says the training installation is opening its doors to visitors for Friday's 8 p.m. event. He urges attendees to get there early for the best seats.

The event features a cannon salute for each state and territory, music by the 282nd Army Band and a 30 minute fireworks display. Returning after a year's absence due to budget constraints, soldiers are participating in the torch lit march known as a "Torchlight Tattoo." It goes back to a European military tradition of recalling the troops to their camps at night.

Valid identification is required for those over 10 years old.
