NINETY SIX, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A wanted fugitive who fled from officers after his arrest was apprehended on Eddy Road in Ninety Six on Friday afternoon, police said.
Laurens County deputies said 27-year-old Michael Brandon Bowie was initially arrested at about 10 a.m. on a criminal domestic violence charge.
Lt. Judy Stiles said on the way to jail, Bowie complained of chest pains so he was taken to the hospital. After he was checked out, Stiles said Bowie took off running as the deputy went to unlock the patrol car.
Stiles said Bowie was handcuffed, but it was not clear if he was still handcuffed because she said he broke into a house across the street where a Laurens County jailer lives and stole an SUV. She said a chase began going into Greenwood County, but he abandoned it in Ninety Six.
Police said the stolen cream-colored Ford Edge was spotted in the area of American Legion Road and a witness saw Bowie run into the woods. Police, deputies and SLED officers were out searching for him in the area.
According to police, Bowie was considered dangerous, but they did not know if he was armed. Police said he was seen wearing a T-shirt, shorts and that he was not wearing any shoes.
He was seen by a FOX Carolina cameraman being taken into custody around 4 p.m.
Police said Bowie is now facing charges of burglary, grand larceny and escape.
