It's day to be patriotic but perhaps one guy took it too far. A man was arrested
after Savannah- Chatham metropolitan police said he stole a British flag from
Battlefield Memorial Park at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Louisville Road.
The British flag was flying on top of the battle mound as part of a
revolutionary war reenactment. Police said they saw a man steal it and when
they approached him, he was not willing to let go of it until police say they
finally wrestled the man to ground.
The flag belongs to the Coastal Heritage Society but when police returned
it, the flag had been desecrated.
WTOC spoke to a couple of reinactors who said it looks like the flag had
been stabbed with its stake holder. They said the flag was not a historic
artifact, only a replica but it won't be flying on the mound again until it can
be fixed or replaced.
We still don't know what the guy's motive was for stealing it but some
wonder if this was a cynical act of patriotism.
