DNR Officers hit Lake Wylie this 4th of July weekend

LAKE WYLIE, SC (WBTV) -

Law officials will be out all weekend patrolling Lake Wylie.

DNR officers showed WBTV how they plan to keep you safe this holiday weekend.

"It's real crowed and today is amateur day. The lake is full of amateurs so you have to keep your eyes out at all times," said boater Bill Neil.

Neil says he doesn't mind seeing the stepped up presence from South Carolina DNR officers this weekend at Lake Wylie.

WBTV hit the waters with two officers as they checked boaters for safety requirements.

While many boaters had the required safety equipment officers were looking for, some weren't so fortunate.

Officers will be making sure boaters have life jackets for all passengers, a working fire extinguisher, updated registration and a whistle or bell.

Officers will also be on the lookout for impaired boaters.

It is against the law in both Carolinas to operate a boat with a blood alcohol level above .08.

"You're going to have the potential to have a lot more of impaired boaters out there, but that's why we're out here, we're trying to show a presence. Hopefully that will deter them," said DNR Game Warden Larry Rogers.

Officials say while they want you to have a good time celebrating this holiday weekend, they also want you to be responsible.

"We're not trying to keep anybody from having a good time, we try to take that into consideration when we do a safety stop. We just want to make sure everybody is safe," said Rogers.

"It's very crowed and the water is a little rough today. Just be careful and everyone's cool," said Neil.

As for Neil he hopes everyone can enjoy the 4th safely and have a great weekend on the lake.

South Carolina officials say when you're on your boat make sure you have plenty of life jackets for everyone on your vessel. Also, Children must wear a life vest at all times.
