New motion in fight over funding for new Braves stadium

MABLETON, GA (CBS46) -

A Cobb County governmental watchdog group is trying to get a judge to deny the county's bond validation request and halt the building of a new Braves stadium.

Rich Pellegrino, a member of the group, filed a motion and brief to intervene and object to the bond validation Thursday.

In his brief, he cites the Georgia State Constitution and says the way by which the county plans to repay the bonds is illegal.

He said he also has little faith in the Braves' revenue projections.

"The rosy projections, the revenues, are not going to come as the Braves predicted," Pellegrino said. "They didn't in Fulton [County], they didn't in Gwinnett [County]."

Pellegrino said he is concerned the residents of Cobb County are getting a raw deal.

"It is clearly stated in this bond request that they want the ability to raise property taxes across the board if the other means of repayment fail," Pellegrino said.

Whether Pellegrino's motion makes a difference remains to be seen, and he said he isn't sweating it.

"We may lose this battle, you know, with the Braves. However, we're winning the war," he said. "Cobb government and Georgia government and even federal government will never get away with this again."
