BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

At each stop though downtown Birmingham, first it's all about touching the spirit through the word of Christ and Scripture.

There are heads bowed, as the ministers pray with the crowd. Then the volunteers provide a meal to the crowd of mainly homeless people.

Volunteers with "Soldiers of the Cross" say the main goal is to bring hope and joy to the people's lives.

"One thing I found out through this ministry is people don't care what you know, until they know you care," said volunteer Danny McNutt.

"Over the years we developed relations with these guys. It's an amazing thing to see God working and transforming lives," he said.

The volunteers say they feel blessed to get to interact with the people who may not have anyone who cares about them.

"God is so good," James Barnes said.

Barnes says he fell on hard times and is thankful that this ministry is here to encourage him.

"It's just a blessing to me to hear the word of God," said Barnes. "It's just touching. I'm trying to hold it together from not crying. I give Him all the praise."

The ministry is out of Adamsville. Every Thursday, volunteers pack up their truck with food and hit the road to make their rounds.

They go through downtown Birmingham because it's where many homeless people are hanging out. The ministry also provides toiletry items to them.

Soldiers of the Cross has been doing this for 12 years now.
