GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Five families were out of a home Saturday after an early morning fire swept through a Greenville apartment complex, according to fire investigators.

Firefighters with the Greenville Fire Department were called out to a fire at the Berry Street Apartments on Richardson Street just before 2:30 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, Chief Stephen Kovalcik said flames were shooting from the roof of the apartment building. He said it took about 45 minutes for firefighters to knock down the flames.

The blaze started on the outside of the eight-unit apartment building, said fire investigator Tito Dendy. He said the blaze destroyed unit four and damaged at least three others.

No one living in the apartments was hurt.

Kovalcik said residents will be unable to return to the building until engineers can determine if it is structurally safe after the extensive damage to the roof.

In the meantime, the Red Cross is helping displaced residents find temporary lodging.

The official cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Dendy said fireworks are the likely suspect.

"People living in the apartments and nearby said there were lots of fireworks going off in the area throughout the night," Dendy said."I think this fire is going to turn out to be fireworks-related."
