DUI arrests down, but child safety seat violations remain during holiday weekend

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Independence Day weekend travels oftentimes result in wrecks involving serious injuries or even death.

On Friday, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office conducted three road safety check stops during a five-hour period. Over the course of the weekend, deputies only made 17 DUI arrests, which is down from past checkpoints.

However, deputies said they continue to have a problem with child safety seat violations. A total of 61 citations were issued during the holiday period.

"When an adult's not wearing their seatbelt, that's a decision they made for themselves," said Lt. Lewis Blanchard. "But when a child's not wearing a seatbelt, somebody else made that decision for them, and that's where it's definitely a time for us to step in and take care of the children."

According to data from the  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the Fourth of July holiday period over the last five years (from 2008 to 2012), 765 people lost their lives in crashes involving drivers with a BAC of .08 or more. These fatalities account for 40 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities over this same five-year period.
