Beaufort County student athletes to pay for insurance starting in 2015

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Beaufort County student athletes will have to start paying for their own athletic insurance.

The district used to pay the insurance fee, but because of budget cuts, they can no longer afford it after the upcoming school year.

School officials don't have a price yet, but they don't expect it to cost more than $50. School Board Chair Bill Evans said the last thing the board wants is to have this discourage students from getting involved.

Beginning in the fall of 2015, all of Beaufort County's student athletes will have to pay for their own athletic insurance.

There are nearly 3,000 student athletes in the county, and the district used to pay the insurance for all of them, costing nearly $375,000 a year.

The district was forced to cut $4 million from their $192.9 million budget, and one of those cuts was for athletics insurance.

"We looked at it as an area that we could cut, and we made an agreement that we will continue to pay the fee for this coming school year," said Evans.

However, starting in the 2015-2016 school year, students will have to start paying.

Evans said if the insurance exceeds $50, then there may be some things the district can do to help.

"There's always the possibility that the district can continue to subsidize some of it and then keep the fee down for the students," he said.

The district is currently seeking bids from insurance companies, which are due by July 21. They're hoping to have a provider by august so they can let parents know what the insurance rates will be.
