Port truck drivers hold protest in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah port truck drivers continue their battle for more pay and benefits.

Protesters gathered Tuesday morning for a rally outside the Georgia Ports Authority Headquarters in Garden City holding signs and waving to oncoming traffic.

The truck drivers say the main issue is their classification as "independent contractors," which they say keeps them from getting the same pay and rights as if they were regular full-time employees.

"Being misclassified, we can't get any type of help and get anything done the correct way. Our voices are not heard as they call us independent contractors, we have no voice in this industry," said Carol Cauley, truck driver.

The drivers have delivered a letter to the executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority requesting a public statement on this issue and possibly even a meeting.
