Local farm emergency course helps save a life

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Monday night's grain bin rescue had a happy ending. The rescue success comes from how well trained rescuers are in those situations.

“These farmers do this stuff everyday and they expect it not to happen to them,” said Arkansas State University Assistant Professor Brent Cox. “When it does happen we want to be prepared and makes sure the responders are well trained and know how to approach this.”

Along with working at ASU, Cox is a member of the Greene County Rescue Squad. Monday night's rescue proved just how important those classes are.

“We had training in Marked Tree last week,” said Cox. “Some of the guys who were at that response last night were at training.”

Training goes beyond a classroom setting. Many of the skills they learn are hands on preparing them for real life situations. The Farm Medic Awareness classes are recommended to farm families, farm hands and farm owners. Cox recommends the Farm Medic Responder course to all first responders.

If you’re interested in any of these classes visit www.astate.edu/dpem for more information.
