Valerie Weaver's son Preston has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, which causes him to have multiple seizures a day.
"Number one there's no cure for it and we've not found a medication that controls his seizures yet," Weaver says.
After going through 15 different medications, she's hoping the cannabis oil treatment coming to GRU will help.
"I'm pretty excited that things are getting under way with this trial and I'm excited that Preston is going to be able to be a part of it. I truly believe that this is going to be a life changing medication for a lot of children," she says.
Governor Deal met with doctors at GW Pharmaceuticals and GRU to discuss using the cannabidoil to treat children with seizures, and today he had some good news to announce.
"We are apparently going to be included in what is called an expanded clinical trial, which will allow a broader number of children to participate and also to include areas of the types of seizures that may not have normally been included in the initial testing phase," Governor Deal says.
Valerie says this news is going to help families in more ways than one.
"This all represents hope and I mean, that's what this is this about hope it's giving families hope that have lost hope," Weaver says.
The details of the collaboration should be finalized in the upcoming months so research and trials can start near the end of this year, and we of course will continue to update you here on WFXG with any new developments.
