City of Beaufort to discuss noise ordinance for Beaufort Water Festival

Posted: Updated:

The Beaufort Water Festival is just 10 days away, when thousands of people will pour into the county for all sorts of shows, festivals and a whole lot more.

On Tuesday night, Beaufort County will consider whether to allow some wiggle room on their noise ordinance during the festival.

The noise ordinance restricts loud music seven days a week from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. and restricts the same thing from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. every day but Friday and Saturday.

The festival has events going on all week, so business owners worry that people will want to stay out and spend money past 10 p.m., but may not have anywhere to go.

Some of the restaurants and bars hire bands to play music and the parties can go well into the night, or even the early morning, and none of that will happen if the ordinance is enforced.

Businesses fear they could lose a lot of revenue as this is probably the biggest event all year in the county. Owners said the revenue they make during the festival actually helps them get through the winter months.

Business owners, as well as police, will be able to speak at Tuesday night's meeting to see if they can handle any complaints that may come with the added hours of entertainment.

Owners are requesting the ordinance be relaxed during the festival and would be enforced regularly after the end of the festival.
