(WMC) - Behind the franchise name is really a local mom and pop shop. European Wax Center owner Libsey James is still growing her business on Germantown Parkway, offering complimentary service to first timers.

Now she's working to rectify stolen money from dozens of customers.

Officials say former employee Catherine Fleming, who has since been arrested, has been charged with stealing more than $1,600 from 34 people over five months.

According to police, Fleming allegedly took customers' credit cards, ran them twice, and she pocketed cash from the register on the second swipe.

Fraud expert Andy Wilson says consumers must watch anyone who handles their cards.

"Transactions like this happen in multiple locations across our city, across our state across our country on a regular routine basis day after day," said Wilson. "We also need to be mindful that at home when we get the credit card, bill to peruse this bill to make certain we made the charges that are levied on the bill."

If not, Wilson says investigate further, be vigilant.

James says that's exactly what her clients did, and she's grateful for it. That's is how she figured out what was happening at her business.

"I truly believe that when you treat people the way you want to treated you can grow a great business and that's what we strive for everyday." said James. "We love our guests. We love our loyal guests."

James says no one's personal information was compromised.
