Claremont, CA (PRWEB) July 09, 2014

The KGI School of Pharmacy (SoP) was recently granted Pre-candidate accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). The SoP will admit its first class of approximately 80 students into its innovative new PharmD program this fall. The students will be studying at KGIs Claremont campus with numerous opportunities for experiential learning in various industry and healthcare settings throughout the Southern California.

We are thrilled that the ACPE has recognized the quality of the program we are developing at KGI, said Dr. Kathy Webster, dean of the School of Pharmacy. The scope of pharmacy practice is dramatically expanding as PharmDs take on new roles in patient care and research. We are working very hard to create a program that will address these changes and take pharmacy education to a new level.

Pre-candidate status is a recognition awarded to a new Doctor of Pharmacy program that has not yet enrolled students in the professional program. It authorizes the college or school to admit its first class and signifies that the program is progressing toward accreditation and is likely to attain it within a defined time period.

The School of Pharmacy (SoP) will officially welcome the Class of 2018 at a White Coat Ceremony on Saturday, August 23. The ceremony, in which students receive traditional lab coats, marks their transition in to a professional program. Once the SoP has admitted its first class it will be eligible to receive candidate status in 2015 and will then be eligible for full accreditation when the inaugural class graduates in 2018.

The SoP faculty and staff are creating an innovative new program with an emphasis on areas such as informatics, pharmacogenomics, operations management and clinical and regulatory affairs, KGI President Sheldon Schuster said. In addition, the PharmD program will also incorporate KGIs core strengths including its team-based approach to learning and the opportunity to work closely with a wide array of industry and community partners.
