BRYAN CO., GA (WTOC) -

An investigation is underway after an early morning crash that left two people injured and shut down part of I-95.

The accident happened during the morning rush hour, causing a major traffic jam on one of the area's busiest interstates.

"Basically what happened was we had a vehicle that was broke down on the side of the road with an individual sleeping in it," said Michael Albritton, Richmond Hill Police.

In fact, a viewer contacted the WTOC newsroom to say that the car has been parked on the side of I-95 for a couple days.

At around 6 a.m. Thursday, a pickup truck veered off the highway going southbound and hit the parked car.

"The vehicle that struck the vehicle on the side of the road ended up flipping one or two times," stated Albritton.

The woman in the parked car was airlifted to a hospital. Witnesses say the driver of the truck was alert and walking around, but he was later transported to the hospital by ambulance. There is currently no update on their conditions.

Albritton says there is a lesson to learn in all of this.

"Don't park your car on the side of the road. If you need assistance, call for help."

The southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for nearly 2 hours while police worked to clear the wreckage. The lanes have since reopened.

Richmond Hill Police are investigating the crash.
