37-mile pursuit of bank robbery suspect ends in capture

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Richland County sheriff's deputies have captured a suspect who robbed a Wells Fargo bank branch on Thursday morning following a 37 mile pursuit of him up Interstate 26.

According to Richland County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Curtis Wilson, 51-year-old Lyle Patrick Burnett robbed a bank branch on Two Notch Road shortly before 11 a.m.

Wilson said Burnett fled the area in a Chrysler 300 with an unknown amount of money. Burnett, according to investigators, then led deputies on a chase all the way to I-26.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster says Richland County alerted Newberry County to the pursuit, which allowed deputies to position themselves on exit ramps with tire deflation devices.

The first set of deputies decided against deployment due to heavy traffic and concerns for safety. Those deputies then closed the interstate to prevent those concerns.

A second set of deputies who were positioned at the Main Street exit deployed the devices.

Burnett attempted to avoid the strips, but stopped in the grass shoulder, said officials. He was quickly surrounded and taken into custody without incident.

I-26 was closed for a short time after the pursuit ended.
