A Savannah teenager was taken into custody after police say he caused an accident that injured five people while he was driving a stolen car. Police were surprised to discover the driver was only 13 years old.
Officers say just after 5pm yesterday, Donald Mitchell was driving a Buick Century and ran the stop sign at Paulsen and Gwinnett Streets in Savannah. The Buick hit a westbound Geo with five people inside. The Buick then hit a curb and flipped on its side.
Witnesses helped push the car back over, but Mitchell jumped out and ran. He was arrested at a house on Waters Avenue a short time later.
Two front seat passengers in the Geo--a four-year-old and 16-year-old--were seriously injured. They were rushed to Memorial Health along with the driver and two brothers. The four-year-old was last listed in critical condition.
Mitchell was taken to the Youth Detention Center to face charges of possession of a stolen auto and leaving the scene of a serious accident. He is also on probation from an earlier robbery. More charges could be filed against him.
