HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A beached pilot whale was found Thursday morning on Hilton Head Island.

The stranded whale was found around 6:30 a.m. in the Port Royal Plantation near beach mile marker 118.

NOAA went to the beach to perform a necropsy. It took the crew more than five hours to finish.

"It was gross," said onlooker Haley Thompson. "Bit it was all interesting abc cool to see the autopsy, that's why I stopped."

NOAA is trying to find out if the whale has the morbillivirus that has killed dolphins in the area.

"They're not going to be sure what the cause of death is for this pilot whale until much later. They're being very careful right now...with all of their suits and masks because some disease are easy to catch between mammals and we are mammals. "

This has been the first whale to wash up on shore this year.

NOAA will not get the test results back for a few months.
