Mayor: No rift between county, city on police merger agreement

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson answered questions on Thursday about what appeared to be a rift between Chatham County and the city of Savannah over the police merger agreement.

The county is looking to renegotiate its end of the deal amid some concerns over the hiring of a new police chief.

County Commission Chairman Al Scott sent a letter to the mayor, to which the mayor responded in writing.

Jackson said there is no rift and both sides are communicating.

"I don't know what the media is talking about when they say problems," said Jackson. "Mr. Scott and I have a very good working relationship. The city manager runs the city on a daily basis, and she is responsible for the search and she and Mr. Smith are working together on the police chief."
