House approves Savannah Harbor deepening funds

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (WTOC) -

House lawmakers on Capitol Hill have approved the 2015 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill.

It was approved Thursday evening with a bipartisan vote providing more than $1.5 million in funding for the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project and opening the door to millions in state funding awaiting a green-light from the federal government.

The act also reportedly contains a provision requiring updates every week if a project partnership agreement is not signed in a timely fashion.

Georgia District 1 U.S. Congressman Jack Kingston released a statement on the new vote to fund construction of the harbor deepening project saying, "the bill begins a long-term commitment with initial funding of $1.52 million, recognizes the port as an ongoing project placed at the top of the Army Corps' priority list, and holds the Obama Administration accountable by ensuring the corps signs a dredging agreement soon, or report every week why they are not."
