LITCHFIELD BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A Georgetown County Sheriff's Deputy was involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of Valerie Harrington, 36, of Pawleys Island.

According to the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Georgetown County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Ashcraft Circle in the Litchfield Beach Community for a welfare check.

Sheriff's deputies were contacted by a family member concerned for Harrington's well-bring and a legal representative that she was in a bathroom with a knife threatening to harm herself.

Sheriff's deputies were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence and located the property manager who unlocked the door.

When sheriff's deputies were clearing the residence, Harrington allegedly charged the deputies with a knife.

A sheriff's deputy then used lethal force to stop Harrington, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division was called to investigate the shooting and the crime scene.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
