FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) -

The Coast Guard called off its search Monday night for an 18-year-old James Island man who disappeared during a dive with his father over the weekend.

Tristen Allen went missing Saturday afternoon after a diving session with his father 13 miles southeast of Folly Beach.

According to Coast Guard officials, authorities have covered an area of more than 2,759 square miles over a 53-hour period in the search for Allen before suspended the search at sunset Monday. The search has included four planes, four helicopters, and multiple boats and cutters. Many of the search vehicles came from nearby states like Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Allen's father says the pair were about 13 miles off the coast of Folly Beach when the two resurfaced as scheduled, but his son went back under while trying to remove his weight belt and never came back up.

“This is a heartbreaking time for everyone involved, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Tristen Allen’s family, friends and loved ones,” said Capt. Ric Rodriguez, commander of Coast Guard Sector Charleston, in a statement. “Decisions to end searches are among the most difficult Coast Guard members are ever forced to make, and are not ones we take lightly.”

Officials say the search can resume "if credible information is received taht persons reported missing have survived."
