Driver recounts the day he found a deer in his car

WORTH CO., GA (WALB) - A Georgia man still can't believe what happened to him after his car hit a deer. Driver Rick Jefferson got a few more surprises after the accident.

Jefferson is one of many south Georgia drivers who unfortunately have hit a deer while driving.  But what happened after he hit a deer in Poulan, GA made his story unusual.

"All the sudden out of nowhere I just saw a deer head," said Jefferson. "It is the craziest thing I've ever seen personally. Yes it is. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen."

Jefferson was driving down U.S. Hwy. 82 when a small buck ran out and hit the front of his car, just before flipping over crashing through his back window. The deer ended up in the back seat.

"I didn't even know he was in there until I got ready to turn into the store and looked up in the rear view mirror and saw his head sitting up in the back seat," said Jefferson.

Hair from the animal and glass were still in the backseat two weeks after it happened. Jefferson said it's a crazy situation because people don't often put deer in their backseat on purpose, and it rarely happens by accident.

"Never in a million years, you'd think you'd see a deer in someone's back seat that they're not going to have back there on purpose, to take in and cook or something," Jefferson laughed.

The young buck didn't die immediately though. Jefferson thinks it kicked his seat after hopping in.

"I thought it was dead with impact until later on I started feeling pains in my back and in my side so I had some people look at my back and they saw a couple bruises. So I suppose it kicked my backseat."

Jefferson dropped the deer off at a deer processor nearby, but didn't take the deer meat home. He said he was just happy to get it out of his car.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving. But they are also on the hunt for anyone who is distracted while driving.  "Well I checked the jail when I left a few minutes ago and we have openings," s...More >>
