WTOC kicks off Scam Week

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It's Scam Week at WTOC, and all week long we will be telling you about the most popular scams making the rounds, and we want to hear from you, too!

Go to our WTOC Facebook and Twitter pages and let us know if you've been scammed.

One of the biggest red flags lately is the Green Dot scam. If anyone tells you they need you to put money on a Green Dot Card to win a prize, get out of jury duty or pay your power bill, don't do it.

The Green Dot Card routine has been used more and more in the last year by scammers trying to strike fear into victims who need to put money on the card quickly to get out of trouble or get a loved one out of trouble.

Financial crimes detectives said the most important thing to remember is once you use a Green Dot Card, police lose track of the crook.

"There is really no way of tracking these people down, so if you fall for these scams, there is a possibility you will never see justice or see your money back," said SCMPD Financial Crimes Det. Ray Woodberry.
