SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Gene Sauers came so close to winning his first major title on the Champions Tour at the U.S. Senior Open over the weekend.

The former Georgia Southern Eagle and Atomsmasher would go to a playoff with the eventual champion in Colin Montgomery.

Both finished at -5 as they went to a three hole aggregate playoff.

Sauers' comeback is remarkable, not having one since 2002 on the PGA Tour.

Sauers has played in 12 events this season on the Champions Tour, and now goes from being unranked in points, to eighth on the list.
