CARROLLTON, GA (CBS46) -

A grandfather and his grandson were identified as the victims in a deadly plane crash Sunday night in Carrollton.

Richard Haney, 70, was a well-known business leader in the area, and his passenger on board the Steen Skybolt aircraft was his 9-year-old grandson Jeffrey Haney.

"While we are deeply grieved and mourn the loss of these family members, we are comforted to know they died doing what they loved," said family spokesman Weyman Rooks. "We continue to believe in God's mighty plans and purposes and celebrate these two precious lives that were certainly and without a doubt well-lived."

The NTSB was on scene Monday to begin their investigation. A spokesman said it appeared as though the aircraft clipped a tall tree before it came down in thick woods, just outside of Carrollton.

"I would like to ask, and the entire family would like to ask, for your continued prayers and support to assist them in getting through this very difficult time," said Rooks.

Weather conditions at the time of the crash Sunday night were favorable, according to the NTSB. It will be several months before their investigation leads to the release of a probable cause of the crash.
