12 NEWS DEFENDERS: Viewer finds inmate's Facebook page

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The internet is supposed to be off limits for inmates in Alabama -- so how could there be a Facebook page for an inmate?

The 12 News Defenders were alerted to an Alabama inmate's Facebook page by a concerned viewer.

They asked not to be identified but told us, in their opinion, serving time should mean no social media especially for someone convicted of manslaughter.

We reached out to the Alabama Department of Corrections and were told the page under the name Jay Runpacheck Thomas does appear to belong to Jeremy Thomas, a Montgomery man serving time for manslaughter.

He pleaded guilty to the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

The page was taken down not long after we notified DOC. It contained a picture of Thomas that appeared to be taken from inside prison.

He also appeared to have conversations with people.

DOC can't confirm Thomas was the one updating the page. They did search his cell at Ventress Correctional Facility in Bullock County, but no cell phone or communication device was found.

The possession of cell phones behind bars and providing cell phones to inmates is against the law.

The Department of Corrections also has a policy against inmates using social networks.

If you suspect or know of an inmate in violation of this policy, you can report the suspicious activity by filling out an investigation request form on the Department of Corrections website.
