Family thwarts robbery at Rincon Inn and Suites

One robber didn't account for one family's bravery when he tried to hit a Rincon hotel.

While he got away, he didn't leave unscathed.

Everything went wrong for this robber, starting when he chose the Rincon Inn and Suites on U.S. Highway 80 as his mark.

The family that lives at and runs the hotel fought back. The owner and his 69-year-old father left the robber bleeding a trail of evidence behind him as he fled.

"Wrong family to mess with," said Effingham County Sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor. "Wrong hotel to pick."

Deputies said the robber smashed the glass of the Rincon Inn and Suites then went to the lobby looking for cash.

He dug through drawers, trying to be slick and cover his fingerprints.

"It could have been a lot worse," said Ehsanipoor.

As it turns out, the gun the robber was carrying was fake, but the three-generation family living at and running the hotel didn't know that.

There was a three year old in the manager's room when the gunman burst in, demanding cash. The manager's father ran to help.

"They fought him off," said Ehsanipoor. "They drew blood from him."

The robber ran, leaving blood and DNA evidence investigators are analyzing right now.

"They're obviously not the family to mess with," Ehsanipoor said.

After all that trouble, the robbery got away with nothing. The victims refused to give up any cash.

It's been four days since the robbery, but deputies are still looking for the suspect.
