An accident last night on Savannah's east side has claimed the life of a four-year-old girl. Janeya Mitchell died at the hospital at 5:30pm tonight. Police say she was sitting in the front seat of a red Geo Metro when the car was struck by a white Buick that ran a stop sign at the intersection of Gwinnett and Paulsen.
The other four people in the car were not seriously hurt.
The driver of the Buick is 13-year-old Donald Mitchell, no relation to Janeya. He faces several serious charges including vehicular homicide.
He will be arraigned tomorrow at the Chatham County Juvenile Courthouse.
According to authorities, this isn't the first time he has committed serious crimes. He was committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice for robbery, battery and criminal damage to property.
Authorities would not comment on why he was released.
