Proposed Annexation Creates Controversy

There's controversy over a massive annexation proposal by Savannah, in southwest Chatham. Owners of more than 6,000 acres of undeveloped land have petitioned the city for annexation, seeking services for future development.

But some are concerned about the impact the annexation would have on others, so officials from Chatham County and West Chatham municipalities brought it up in discussions with state lawmakers and Savannah officials today at the Chatham County Commission.

"We don't ever want anyone annexed into a city against their will," said commissioner Dean Kicklighter. "I believe if anyone chooses to be annexed, they should do so with a vote."

In this case, all the owners of the property in question have joined the petition, so Savannah can apparently move ahead with it despite the controversy. A vote is planned for next week.
