Savannah Sports Council announces new road race exclusively for women

On Monday, the Savannah Sports Council announced a brand new race exclusively for women!

If you're familiar with the saying "the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world", you may understand why the SSC believes that the feet that do the running spend the money.

The new race is called the Publix Savannah Women's Half Marathon and 5k.  Visit Savannah said that a whopping 80 percent of the participants in the Rock and Roll Marathon were women.

"So we wanted to specifically target to them, but we also have a hidden agenda: women really drive the travel buying decision, so we hope that if we get a lot of participants in the race, they're going to Savannah in the future," explained President of Visit Savannah Joe Marinelli.

Even if the women don't return, they are here for an event that may only take a couple of hours, but they stay and play longer.

"Between two to four days, and they're spending those exponentially, staying in hotels, enjoying museums and tours, and of course shopping and spas," said Marinelli.

Both organizations have been working on this hush-hush race for about a year and paired up with Publix. The official charity and training partner for the race is The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - Team in Training.

A local trainer that works with beginner half marathoners said the route is worth the work.

"Being with your friends, doing something empowering, whether it's your first 5k or first half marathon, nothing beats that finish line of crossing," said Victoria Ten Broeck.

And you've got time to train.  The race kicks off in Forsyth Park on March 28, 2015, but if you decide right now, you can get the kick off sale price when you register by Friday.
