GSU continues summer watermelon sharing tradition

How about some ice cold watermelon on a hot summer day?

Georgia Southern University carried on their summer tradition on Tuesday by serving watermelon to students, staff and faculty.

The event started in the summer of 1948 and servers said it's a way of bringing the university together at a time of year when some may think there's no one there.

"When you get them all together in a setting like this, theres more people here than you realize because parking lots might not show it," said Michael Price with GSU's Culinary Operations. "This gives you a chance to get them together for a visit for a bit."

The tradition traces back to the period when the university had only 100 or so summer students and when the university had their own farm to grow most of the food served in the dining hall.
