MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Two chimpanzees from the Myrtle Beach Safari went to the opening night of Dawn of the Planet of Apes Friday, and hopefully, this won't be a case of "monkey see, monkey do."

Vali and Sugriva, both two-year-old chimps from the T.I.G.E.R.S. Preserve, went to the opening night of the new movie at the Carmike Broadway 17 Big D Cinema at Broadway at the Beach on Friday night.

The two chimps appeared as excited as they were led into the cinema and paid for their tickets. They even paid for their own popcorn and drinks before heading upstairs to watch the film.

Vali and Sugriva appeared to be riveted by the on-screen performance of their counterparts – at times clapping and watching attentively. At one point, the movie's action even frightened one of the chimps, who turned and hugged the trainer.

According to the theater manager, the chimps gave Dawn of the Planet of the Apes two thumbs up.

The Myrtle Beach Safari is also known as T.I.G.E.R.S., or The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species. It exists as the Tigers Preservation Station at Barefoot Landing, a free wildlife exhibit, and as a 50-acre preserve in Myrtle Beach, which is home to over 60 big cats and other animals.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving. But they are also on the hunt for anyone who is distracted while driving.  "Well I checked the jail when I left a few minutes ago and we have openings," s...More >>
