SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Wednesday marks the 40th anniversary of Senior Citizens Incorporated's Senior Companion Program.

It's a national program that pairs senior volunteers with frail seniors and other homebound adults. Senior companions provide friendship and assistance with daily chores to seniors in need, which allows many of them to continue living on their own, therefore lowering community and government costs for senior care.

"There is a way for people to still make a difference, and just because you are older or just because you are retired, doesn't mean you can't provide something that is really worthwhile to the community," said Senior Citizens Inc.

"It is a very rewarding experience," said senior companion Beverly Clownly. "I get to do stuff that they like to do and that I like to do."

Last year Senior Citizen Inc.'s 78 senior companions provided almost 70,000 hours of service and companionship to more than 300 seniors in Chatham and Liberty counties.
