Man killed by train overnight in Garden City

A man is dead after an accident on the train tracks in Garden City.

It happened where Dean Forest Road becomes Bourne Avenue, also known as GA 307, between Robert B. Miller Road and Commerce Boulevard at around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

According to Garden City Fire, a man driving a pickup truck ignored the crossing gate warning and attempted to drive around the railroad caution arm when he was struck and killed by an oncoming train. They say the train dragged the truck for about a mile up the tracks, crushing the vehicle.

The train involved was an Amtrak passenger train that did have passengers on board at the time. Employees say the train was heading north from Miami to several cities in North Carolina. None of the passengers or crew on the train were injured.

A Garden City official gave a statement about the incident.

"You can only speculate why they run it, they may be in a hurry or distracted. From what we can tell, this was an intentional act of trying to go around it," said Sgt. Benji Selph, Garden City Police.

Police had the southbound lanes of Hwy 21 closed for hours while investigators looked over the scene. Both lanes have since reopened.

There was no damage to the tracks and officials say the train is back en route.
