DIBOLL, TX (KTRE) - Structure damage to a correctional facility in Diboll caused injuries Saturday.

Diboll police say damage caused a twenty-foot high ceiling to collapse at the Diboll Correctional Center, a private prison that houses minimum custody offenders, Saturday.

Diboll Correctional Center, located at 1604 South First Street, is a private facility operated by Management and training Corporation (MTC).

Authorities with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice say that sheet rock fell in an offender housing area, and that there were not serious injuries. According to Issa Arnita, Director of Communications, 19 of the 86 offenders in the housing unit were transported to a local hospital to be evaluated. One inmate was then flown to a hospital in Houston. Of the 19 inmates injured, two remain in the hospital Sunday. One, who was flown to a hospital in Houston, is expected to be released soon. The other, at a local hospital, is in good condition. Most of the injuries were minor.

Representatives with MTC say a team of engineers and investigators with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice will visit the correctional center on Monday to determine the cause of the damage. They say, the ceiling in one of the six housing units collapsed, housing 86 inmates. Inmates normally housed in the unit with damage were transferred to another facility Saturday, and will remain there until the damage has been prepared.
