Army vet worried officials will take his pet ducks

An Iraq War Army veteran is afraid officials in Ohio will take away his therapeutic ducks.

Darin Welker said officials in West Lafayette – a town 80 miles east of Columbus – told him to get rid of his 14 pet ducks in May. And when officials returned June 23, they cited Welker with a misdemeanor for failing to comply.

Welker is scheduled to appear in Coshocton Municipal Court for a hearing Wednesday. He could incur a $150 fine.

Welker contends that his ducks help him with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder by keeping him active.

"They're quite a relaxing animal, and they help comfort me in different situations," Welker recently told the Coshocton Tribune. "[Watching them] keeps you entertained for hours at a time."

West Lafayette banned residents from keeping fowl and other farm animals in 2010.
