ILA Hands Out Thanksgiving Dinners

When you sit down with family and friends and give thanks for the good food you'll be enjoying this Thanksgiving, remember for many in our community, getting food on the table will be a struggle. But one local group is making sure families in the Coastal Empire don't go without.

They work hard at the ports, but on this day the men and women with the International Longshoreman's Association are making sure hundreds of needy families have a table full of food for Thanksgiving.

"God has blessed us, no doubt about it," said ILA vice president Willie Seymour. "The Lord has blessed the Longshoremen, and we feel in return, we want to help someone else be blessed also."

It's blessings by the box full--bags full of collard greens, all the trimmings, and of course, the turkey.

"Sometimes you'd think there was a gold nugget in these boxes the way things are, but it's only food, and we just thank God that we were able to help someone," said Seymour.

The food for this meal comes from many different organizations, including the Longshoremen, who say their contributions are worth every penny.

"I love to give and I love to help, and I'm going to continue to help as long as I'm here," said Richard Ferguson, sergeant-at-arms for the ILA Local 1414. "Favorite day of the year, got to be, giving to others it don't get no better than this."

ILA Local 1414 has been giving out these Thanksgiving boxes for 28 years. Next year, they'll be moving into a new and bigger building and hope to help even more families.
