Chatham County polls report low voter turnout so far

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

There are three races that really have people buzzing, Georgia's open U.S. Senate Seat, the First Congressional District Seat, and the race for the Savannah-Chatham County School Board President.

But is it enough to really get people out to the polls on Tuesday?

WTOC stopped by one of Wilmington Island's polling locations Tuesday morning and asked how the turnout had been so far.

"Uhh, slow. The weather probably has people dragging," said Ashley Burke, poll manager at Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church.

And those who are able to drag themselves to the polls Tuesday likely won't find any lines.

"It's a runoff so we expect it to be light," says Burke.

But there are some issues that still have people willing to get out and vote.

Voter Caroline Hopkins said, "Well, I have extended family in this neighborhood, I've got grandchildren, and I know the schools are very important."

Many are heading to the polls to vote for changes in the school system.

"I just want to see some involvement of those representatives that we elect, and just a real concern for our children's future," stated Hopkins.

For others, it's personal.

"A lot of people here know the candidates," said David Paddison, voter and friend of the Kingston family.

"I've been a great friend of the Kingston family for many years, and I'm really excited about all the hard work Jack has done to get elected and I wish him the best," says Paddison.

Either way, those who do vote in Tuesday's Primary runoff know they are making a difference.

"I know turnout is usually low during runoff elections so any vote is important, even if it's just one," says Hopkins.

If you still haven't gone to vote, you still have plenty of time. The polls will be open until 7 p.m. and if you need a ride in Chatham County, the NAACP Savannah Branch is offering free rides to the polls from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Just call 912.233.4161 to request a ride.
