Savannah is keeping an eye on another important race during the primary runoff on Tuesday:  the race for Chatham County School Board President.

This has been an unusual contest, pitting a PTA mom against an Army Green Beret in a high-profile battle that sometimes turned ugly.

Then that Green Beret, candidate David Simons, dropped out of the runoff after falling a distant second in the race to Armstrong Sociology Professor and PTA mom Jolene Byrne. The third place finisher, Rev. Chester Ellis, is taking Simons' place in the runoff.

Ellis was reluctant to join the runoff at first, but he jumped back into the race at the encouragement of his seven-year-old grandson.

"He said, ‘Grandpa, if they want you to run, you should run,'" said Ellis. "So I checked with my advisors and found out where we were."

"People right now are really motivated and excited," said Byrne. "So we just have to keep folks engaged after the election."

This race, unlike others being held on Tuesday, will be decided on Tuesday. This is a non-partisan contest, so there is no runoff in November.
