SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Buddy Carter is celebrating on Tuesday night after defeating Dr. Bob Johnson in the Georgia Republican First Congressional District Race with 54 percent of the vote.

Carter will replace Rep. Jack Kingston.

Carter and Johnson launched a string of attack ads each claiming the other was not a true conservative.

It's been a year-and a half long race for Carter, a Pooler pharmacist and longtime member of the Georgia State Senate.

Carter was in the lead from the outset. A lead that looked at times shaky as the Tea Party endorsed Johnson.

Carter's Democratic opponent hasn't raised much and right now, Carter is expected to win the seat.

"I've only been to Washington six times in my life, believe it or not, and five of those have been within the past year," Carter said. "Yeah, I don't get around much, but it's not about me going to Washington. It's about the First Congressional District values going to Washington."

It's a trip to Washington political pundits have said is more than that year and a half campaign in the making. Carter has been percieved from the outset to tbe Kingston's heir apparent.
