Sword swinging suspect shot by police

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Neighbors like Carol Veliotis couldn't believe it.

A man, armed with a sword, was running through Veliotis's neighborhood, weaving in and out of traffic at Legion Drive and Brookwood Circle in Covington.

"I've never seen anything like that in my neighborhood," Veliotis said. "I don't want crazy people with machetes or weapons in my neighborhood."

Police said when an officer arrived, Julian Faulkner, charged.

The officer backed up and told Faulkner to drop the weapon.

"The suspect became more agitated and raised the sword over his head and attacked again. The officer had no choice. He fired his weapon, striking the suspect one time," Treadwell said.

Faulkner was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

David Denham lives across the street from Faulkner about a quarter mile away from where police shot him.

Denham said Faulkner seemed unusual, but not prone to outbursts.

"He's a very quiet guy, you can tell something is off. He didn't seem like he was a violent guy," Denham said.

The officer was not hurt.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.

The officer was placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete, per department policy.
